From NYC to Morocco: My Journey Begins at JFK Terminal 1
Not when the plane takes off, but when you walk into the airport with your passport in hand, your suitcase rolling behind you, and your thoughts already halfway over the globe, there's something beautiful about the start of a voyage. For me, that moment began at JFK's Terminal 1 while flying with Royal Air Maroc to Casablanca.
First Impressions: Terminal 1 at JFK
Although it isn't the newest terminal at JFK, Terminal 1 has a certain allure of its own. In that big-city sense, it's crowded, multinational, and a little hectic, but once you know where you're going, everything falls into place. This terminal is where you start if you're flying to Morocco or connecting to one of the many African or European locations served by JFK Air Maroc Terminal.
I got there at least three hours prior to my flight. It was very easy to check in. When it comes to foreign travel logistics, you truly appreciate the friendliness and efficiency of the Royal Air Maroc team. The line went swiftly, and I was at security with my boarding pass in hand in about half an hour.

Security and Pre-Boarding
Terminal 1 offers the necessities but isn't particularly ostentatious. After getting a coffee from one of the cafés, I took a short stroll around the area. When you're prepared to set out on your own trip, there's something soothing about seeing planes come and go.
The Royal Air Maroc Lounge (for Business Class Travelers)
It's important to note that Royal Air Maroc provides lounge access to its business class customers, even though I was traveling in economy this time. A pleasant luxury in any terminal, the lounge offers a peaceful area to unwind, charge your electronics, and have a bite before boarding.
Boarding the Dreamliner
The boarding process started on schedule, and I approached the gate with a mixture of frightened and excited adrenaline. With a hearty "Salam Alaikum," the Royal Air Maroc crew welcomed us and set the stage for what felt more like a cultural immersion than a simple trip.
The airplane was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which is renowned for its mood lighting and quieter cabins—small features that significantly improve the comfort of long-haul travel. The in-flight entertainment featured an excellent selection of international films, Moroccan music, and even a few documentaries about North Africa. The seats were cozy and had good legroom for economy travelers.

Looking Ahead to Morocco
I reflected on how travel always starts with little moments like these as I took my seat and watched the lights of New York City go out into the distance. The sounds of several languages, the aroma of spicy food being heated in the galley, and the knowledge that I would be strolling through Casablanca's streets in a few hours.
Even though JFK Terminal 1 isn't the most ostentatious in the world, it provided all the amenities I needed to begin this trip smoothly, from check-in to boarding. And with Royal Air Maroc, the trip to Morocco started well before the plane touched down—with a friendly greeting, a cozy seat, and the sense of excitement that comes with travel.
